King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) have done their home work for Umrah 2012

King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), Jeddah is gearing up to receive an expected record influx of Umrah pilgrims this year. Following last year’s influx of pilgrims into the Kingdom for Hajj and Umrah, the authorities are expecting record numbers of pilgrims in 2012.

As part of the new Umrah plan, only pilgrims who have reserved return tickets for their departure will be allowed to enter the airport terminal, according to the airport chief.

The Director General of King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), Abdul Hameed Abal Ari said that this arrangement was aimed at avoiding a heavy rush as well as to prevent a situation where pilgrims are stranded at the airport for a long time and we have virtually started preparations for the next Umrah season well in advance, and this was in coordination and planning with the concerned government agencies at the airport.

The Director General of King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), explained that the Umrah season is quite different from the Hajj season in terms of its operations. The arrival halls of the Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) will start receiving pilgrims for the seven month season starting from 24th of January 2012 (1st of Rabi Al-Awwal 1433 A.H) and onwards. All arrangements are in place at the arrival halls to receive Umrah season flights until the end of 20th of June 2012 (30th of Rajab 1433 A.H). And for the remaining two months of the Umrah season Shaban and Ramadan, the airport authorities have advanced a special plan.

Abal Ari also announced plans to expand and renovate the arrival and departure halls of the terminal as well as ensure their proper maintenance. He also noted that there has been a substantial increase in the number of employees of various government agencies operating at the terminal.

The airport chief said witnessed the most successful Hajj operation during 2011 compared to previous years. Abdul Hameed Abal Ari also acknowledge that last year had been the most successful Hajj operation for KAIA and had seen more than 2.5 million pilgrims pass through on 10,650 flights.

Makkah governor calls for study to control Hajj squatters

On 6th of January 2012 governor of Makkah Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has urged the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj & Umrah to conduct a detailed study on how to end the problem of squatters in public places during the Hajj season.

He also urged the institute’s researchers to conduct studies on the issue of people performing the annual pilgrimage without obtaining valid Hajj permits from Saudi authorities.

The governor said that I want this institute to become a lighthouse of research in Makkah and expressing hope that the institute would be transformed into a college in the near future considering its important role in improving services for the millions of pilgrims who come to Makkah for Hajj and Umrah.

Prince Khaled Al-Faisal thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for changing the name of Hajj research institute affiliated to Umm Al-Qura University. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal made this comment while receiving Bakri Assas, president of Umm Al-Qura University and chairman of the committee that supervises the institute, and Abdul Aziz Sarouji, the institute’s dean, as well as its senior officials.

The governor appreciated the contributions made by the institute during the past years. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal we have benefited a lot from its research and studies while carrying out the various development projects in Makkah and the holy sites.

He specifically noted the institute’s support to designing the new expansions of the Grand Mosque and the mataf, the circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba. He urged the officials to exert more efforts toward improving services for pilgrims.

The president said that we also have a center of excellence for research on Hajj and Umrah. We have a plan to increase the number of academic staff in Makkah and Madinah.

Taif businessmen call for swift development of airport

Taif businessmen call for swift development of airport

The local communities of Taif have demanded a speedy development of the old airport in their city. During peak season it could operate Hajj and Umrah flights, besides promoting business and tourism in the region.

The local people of Taif that the regional airport in Taif should be upgrade to an international level in order to divide the burden of Hajj flights to King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah. They also told that the airport’s distance to Makkah was not more than the distance between Jeddah and Makkah.

The development and opening of the airport for international flights was vital to exploit the tourist and business potential of Taif to the maximum.

Taif businessman community said Hajj flights should be operated to and from Taif so the city could get a share of the profitable business activities related to the pilgrimage. Taif used to do brisk business during Hajj seasons, as all pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom via land passed through the city. The city’s old business status could be resumed if a considerable number of Hajj flights were operated from Taif.

Al-Suwat plans to request the new Hajj minister to revive the role of Taif in the Hajj services. He said the existing infrastructure such as roads, and hotels were good enough to serve pilgrims in large numbers.

Member of Taif Municipal Council, Ahmad Al-Shohaib, said the increase in flights to the airport would open up more employment opportunities to Saudis, especially in hotels and tour operations.

Chairman of the Taif Chamber of Commerce and Industry Naif Al-Adwani said there were signs of authorities showing interest in developing the airport. He hoped that eventually Taif would become the second largest pilgrims’ entry point after Jeddah.

A source at the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said a project is in the pipeline to expand the airport.

In September last year, GACA announced its plan to build a new airport Taif with advanced facilities. Taif Gov. Fahd bin Muammar said land has been handed to the GACA to build the new airport.

The existing airport in Taif, which cannot receive large aircraft, was built in 1955.
